Mother Freakin’ lasers on records

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

[Via thedarkstuff.blogspot.com]

This awesome turntable actually uses freakin’ lasers to read your records. Think about the possiblities! You can make PERFECT duplicates of records with basically an infinite sampling rate without wearing out anything. The caveat? The $15000 (that’s right, 5 figures, baby) price tag only qualifies those with the original gold masters that they themselves produced. So basically, not for the readers of this blog. Go some place cooler. Jeesh.

Turntablists rejoice in USB gadget [Via CNET]

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Some of you folks with large vinyl collections may be interested in this device, that claims to make it a cinch to convert LP’s into your digital format. The Ion USB Turntable (actually written about before, but the PR folks have given the media yet another reason to write about this again) makes it easier than others to do audio conversions as it’s a single device solution with a single USB port.

Electronica as Cardio: A review of Crystal Method’s new release

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[Via The Oregonion]

The goal of Los Angeles electronic duo the Crystal Method’s new release, “Drive: Nike + Original Run,” is a complete cardio workout.

Judging by the floor of energized dancers at 1:30 a.m. Saturday night at Ohm: mission accomplished.

In the early ’90s, after partnering to form the Crystal Method, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan managed to bring a rockier edge to the blooming electronica age and to put at least two American faces to dance music, which is still dominated by European artists.

NYtimes Interview with Sabina Sciubba

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[via NYtimes.com]

Sabina Sciubba, in an interview with Winter Miller of the NY Times, articulates and pontificates about her favorite musical artists.

Sabina Sciubba, the singer-songwriter of Brazilian Girls, talks a mile a minute — in several languages, fluently. Ms. Sciubba, 27, was born in Rome, which accounts for her Italian. Her father is German, which does not account for the Portuguese, Spanish and French she picked up along the way. Her linguistic ease has a delightfully polyglot effect on her lyrics. In “Jique,” which kicks off their September release, “Talk to la Bomb” (Verve), Ms. Sciubba (pronounced “SHOO-bah”) begins a sentence in French, shifts to Spanish and concludes in German.

Ravers targeted at Melbourne dance party

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Police have targeted a Melbourne rave party, arresting 35 people for drug offences.

The ravers were part of a group of about 7,500 who attended the God’s Kitchen dance party at Melbourne Park on Saturday night.

Police with sniffer dogs targeted people entering the dance festival and found some with ecstasy and speed.

Senior Constable Mia Paterson said police welcomed the small number of arrests.

“Police are generally happy with the crowd behaviour,” she said.

The God’s Kitchen event has recently been held in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

New and Improved Rega 3 Turntable

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[Via Gizmodo.com]

A retro stylin’ turntable in the type of design that you see on some kind of hip-rich teen movie, the Rega P3 is nonetheless quite the state of the art audio equipment– that is– if you can live with the almost a grand in dollars price point for something that plays only records. But then again, something like this isn’t for everyone but the most die-hard of the ultra suave (and rich) audiophile. Someone who probably has temperature controlled record room along with the midget live-in assisstant who has a vaguely european accent.
