Zero Gravity shelf for your turntable: When is too much perfectionism… well too much?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

This kind of goes into the WTF category. Check this: A shelf for your turntable suspended on freakin’ magnets so that vibrations don’t filter through and mess up your perfect audio from your vinyls. At a low price of $500.

Honestly I haven’t seen a lot of old skool technics lately at the clubs in Hollywood, and given that the trend is towards live mashing up and using the latest equipment and laptops, I don’t see how this is practically relevant today. I mean, if the guy has $500 to spend, then he probably wouldn’t be bringing this expensive decide to the house party in the boonies with a plastic table that is also used for beer pong.

Let’s call it what it is– a bait/trap/lure for OCD audiophiles to show off.

“Zero Gravity” shelf cushions your turntable with magnetic forces.

True Mobile iPod DJing

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Allright. We all know Japanese people are crazy when it comes to electronics. But this one take the cake. I’m sure you’ve seen big ipod mixing stations where you take ipods and put them together with a mixer and use them in place of turntables. Sounds pretty good right? Now, check out these pictures.

The Turntable PC

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Allright, normally I don’t post stuff about computers on this blog, but I just had to post about this contraption someone pulled out of their bad-ass crazy mind. Basically they gutted a broken Technics 1200 MK II, and put an entire computer inside of it. Well I hope the Technic was broken….

Mother Freakin’ lasers on records

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

[Via thedarkstuff.blogspot.com]

This awesome turntable actually uses freakin’ lasers to read your records. Think about the possiblities! You can make PERFECT duplicates of records with basically an infinite sampling rate without wearing out anything. The caveat? The $15000 (that’s right, 5 figures, baby) price tag only qualifies those with the original gold masters that they themselves produced. So basically, not for the readers of this blog. Go some place cooler. Jeesh.

ION USB Turntable

Another look at a digital turntable from the UK Guardian Unlimited.

Denon DN-HD2500. Not just an digital turntable.

Friday, September 1st, 2006

This beauty, retailing for $799 for a complete mixing and digital based solution– it also comes with Ipod connectors! Time will tell if this amalgamation of all things unholy will prove to be the Swiss-Army of digital mixing systems, or the Sviss-Amy knock-off brand I saw at some market the other day.

Yamaha’s New USB Mixing Studio

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

To go along with the previous post about Numark’s USB Turntable, we have Yamaha’s newest offering.

Now we can expect to see even more laptop performance at events worldwide.

The product page says, in the typical tone common in most product pages, explains that “Combined with the powerful Cubase LE audio/MIDI sequencing software, the MW Mixer provides a comprehensive tabletop studio setup for the solo recording musician and for the travelling producer/arranger”.

Numark announces turntable that connects to your USB port.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

USB webcams, key chains, and now, the USB turntable? Numark demos a turntable that connects directly to the computer, removing the need for a separate sound card. Also comes with technology to remove hissing, popping, and other hallmarks of the rapidly antiquated “analog” system (but by no means unpopular).

Turntable design contest generates accolades

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Apparently, they have an industrial design contest exlusively for the type of sleek, modern-art designed turntables in Europe that you probably expect them to have– at the cost of your firstborn.

One entry reads: “The 3.5kg platter is sandwich-constructed from a metal ring bonded to a flat-ground vinyl surface and uses a brass puck to prevent record slip. The new feature added with this latest release is electronic speed change from 33 – 45 RPM. As with the top of the range Project RPM 9, an inverted bearing is used which has a ceramic ball set into the tip of the stainless-steel bearing shaft, providing an ideal point of contact for the platter’s ceramic thrust plate to revolve upon. This sophisticated design ensures that the forces of the motor acting on the platter are at the same height as the bearing, which helps minimise platter instability and friction in the bearing. The adjustability of the tonearm’s geometry and mass allow the use of even the highest quality cartridges. “
