Extremely video-gamey DJ controller for $92

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Ion Audio has released a new video gamey DJ controller for the incredible price point of $92 (at Amazon). Sporting an (almost) all plastic construction, it’s the real thing– being a fully capable MIDI controller that is compatible with Virtual DJ, Traktor, Mixxx, etc.

Given that the majority of DJ’s I see today make full use of their laptops, this is probably an awesome way to get started on mixing. Has everything you need to learn the essentials!

Zero Gravity shelf for your turntable: When is too much perfectionism… well too much?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

This kind of goes into the WTF category. Check this: A shelf for your turntable suspended on freakin’ magnets so that vibrations don’t filter through and mess up your perfect audio from your vinyls. At a low price of $500.

Honestly I haven’t seen a lot of old skool technics lately at the clubs in Hollywood, and given that the trend is towards live mashing up and using the latest equipment and laptops, I don’t see how this is practically relevant today. I mean, if the guy has $500 to spend, then he probably wouldn’t be bringing this expensive decide to the house party in the boonies with a plastic table that is also used for beer pong.

Let’s call it what it is– a bait/trap/lure for OCD audiophiles to show off.

“Zero Gravity” shelf cushions your turntable with magnetic forces.

Awesome turntablism.

Turntablists rejoice in USB gadget [Via CNET]

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Some of you folks with large vinyl collections may be interested in this device, that claims to make it a cinch to convert LP’s into your digital format. The Ion USB Turntable (actually written about before, but the PR folks have given the media yet another reason to write about this again) makes it easier than others to do audio conversions as it’s a single device solution with a single USB port.

Electronica as Cardio: A review of Crystal Method’s new release

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[Via The Oregonion]

The goal of Los Angeles electronic duo the Crystal Method’s new release, “Drive: Nike + Original Run,” is a complete cardio workout.

Judging by the floor of energized dancers at 1:30 a.m. Saturday night at Ohm: mission accomplished.

In the early ’90s, after partnering to form the Crystal Method, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan managed to bring a rockier edge to the blooming electronica age and to put at least two American faces to dance music, which is still dominated by European artists.

NYtimes Interview with Sabina Sciubba

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[via NYtimes.com]

Sabina Sciubba, in an interview with Winter Miller of the NY Times, articulates and pontificates about her favorite musical artists.

Sabina Sciubba, the singer-songwriter of Brazilian Girls, talks a mile a minute — in several languages, fluently. Ms. Sciubba, 27, was born in Rome, which accounts for her Italian. Her father is German, which does not account for the Portuguese, Spanish and French she picked up along the way. Her linguistic ease has a delightfully polyglot effect on her lyrics. In “Jique,” which kicks off their September release, “Talk to la Bomb” (Verve), Ms. Sciubba (pronounced “SHOO-bah”) begins a sentence in French, shifts to Spanish and concludes in German.

Ravers targeted at Melbourne dance party

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[Via ninemsn.com.au]

Police have targeted a Melbourne rave party, arresting 35 people for drug offences.

The ravers were part of a group of about 7,500 who attended the God’s Kitchen dance party at Melbourne Park on Saturday night.

Police with sniffer dogs targeted people entering the dance festival and found some with ecstasy and speed.

Senior Constable Mia Paterson said police welcomed the small number of arrests.

“Police are generally happy with the crowd behaviour,” she said.

The God’s Kitchen event has recently been held in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

New and Improved Rega 3 Turntable

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

[Via Gizmodo.com]

A retro stylin’ turntable in the type of design that you see on some kind of hip-rich teen movie, the Rega P3 is nonetheless quite the state of the art audio equipment– that is– if you can live with the almost a grand in dollars price point for something that plays only records. But then again, something like this isn’t for everyone but the most die-hard of the ultra suave (and rich) audiophile. Someone who probably has temperature controlled record room along with the midget live-in assisstant who has a vaguely european accent.

Denon DN-HD2500. Not just an digital turntable.

Friday, September 1st, 2006

This beauty, retailing for $799 for a complete mixing and digital based solution– it also comes with Ipod connectors! Time will tell if this amalgamation of all things unholy will prove to be the Swiss-Army of digital mixing systems, or the Sviss-Amy knock-off brand I saw at some market the other day.

Numark and Gemini Ipod Article from ClubTribune.com

Monday, July 31st, 2006

[From Club Triubune]

ClubTribune.com has an excellent article on two Ipod related mixing devices, comparing the Numark vs Gemini mixing consoles. The conclusion? Not something for professionals, but it may have its niche as the popularity of Digital audio players increase in the long term. Much as with growth in CD based turntables, digital audio may be the future (if sound quality worries you, uncompressed or high quality compression may beat that).

A very cool short film about a DJ with special powers.

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

This amazing short film from DoubleEdgeFilms (which seems to have a lot of awards after a quick check of the web site) is about a DJ who has power to remix time (life, happiness, whatever) using records as the medium of transformation. He is literally dropped from the sky.

Pretty interesting mix of characters and plot, including a bboy, an elderly couple, latino gangsters, etc involving drug deals, accidents, and redemption.

Highly recommended by Ravedigital.com [view the fim at DoubleEdgeFilms.com]

AVDJ deck (Audio-Visual-Disk-Jockey vinyl turntable)

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

[Via: 3Eyes]

Quote: “Using experienced gained from the Hodderdoda project we constructed the AVDJ deck. This device optically registers the speed and direction in which the vinyl rotates.

Using software written by us, this information is then translated into frame based movement within a given digital video file. The net result is that an act of turntablism can enable the user to directly manipulate a visual image in addition to an audio sample. The extent of the visual manipulation is directly comparable to the extent of the audio manipulation.”
