Friday, April 21st, 2006

Hewlett-Packard wanted to showcase its innovations in the field of digital music by creating a digital mixing station for professional DJs. Numark’s Hard Drive based Turntable

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

It had to happen eventually. First it was the the hard drive based Ipod, then the hard drive based camcorder, and now, the hard drive based turntable from Numark. The benefits are obvious. All of the versatility of a CD based turntable with fully indexable and searchable library of music. Oh yeah, it uses a real vinyl record on top to simulate the feel. It also reads CD’s. Amazing. No more getting your biyatches to lug your vinyl library that will probably get messed up from parties with the humidity of a South american banana republic. But then again, this thing probably costs the GDP of a small South American banana republic.

Australia’s dance culture has arrived along quite different lines to previous Australian music movements. Although dance culture has been compared with the punk movement through their common element grass-roots expressions of culture, in Australia, punk tended to be an “invasion” of culture from abroad. Australia’s dance culture is certainly “derivative” as it evolved from and relied on changes occurring overseas, however the movement is part of a global network that feeds off itself.

Sony’s Fully Automatic Turntable

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Sony's turntable Sony isn’t known for their turntables (well at least in the 21st century at least), but the CNET gives it a 6.9 “Good” rating. According to Cnet: “The good: Two-speed automatic turntable; push-button controls for start, stop, and arm lift; cast-aluminum platter; premounted phono cartridge, built-in phono preamplifier. The bad: Sounds decent enough but not up to audiophile standards; phono cartridge isn’t replaceable. “
